Miniature artwork, paintings and pottery, will be exhibited at Franklin Square Gallery during De cember. The show will feature original works of art for holiday gift-giving. Exhibit chairman Joyce Martz, workshop instructor Ardella Swanberg and pottery instructor Kimberly Smittle Caroon show a sampling of the artwork which will be exhibited and on sale. Holiday House exhibit scheduled this weekend Fntcrtainment will be provided throughout the two-day Holiday House, sponsored by the Southport Woman’s Club at the Southport Community Building. Holiday House will be open from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday, December 5, and from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, December 6. Residents of Southport and sur rounding areas arc invited to bring their collections and memorabilia for display to the Community Build ing between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Fri day, December 4, Lavcrne Rchdcr, Roberta Hon and ♦ Franccy Wertz will be serving refreshments both days. On Saturday, entertainment will be provided by flutists Nancy Hall and Linda Tronzo from 2 to 3 p.m. Kim Adams and members of the Wil mington Brass will be performing at 3 p.m. Lcola Pickerrcll, pianist, is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. On Sunday, the Sea Coast Clog gers will present a program of dance at 3 p.m. At 4 p.m. Eleanor Smith will sing, accompanied by Leila Pigott. Bill McDougle and Dick Conrad will entertain at 4:30 p.m. ARTS & MUSIC Dramatics workshop for kids A creative dramatics workshop directed by Steve Myott will be held Sat urday, December 5, at the Brunswick County Government Center public assembly building. The workshop will be from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will be followed by a group performance at 1:30 p.m. It is open to children ages six to 12. The cost is $1, and pre-registration is required. Holiday crafts will be made Holiday crafts will be the activity this month for the after-school arts pro gram for six-to-13-year-old boys and girls. It will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Monday, December 7, at the Southport li brary; Tuesday, December 8, at the Shallotte library; and Wednesday, De cember 9, at the Leland library. Children’s art is show theme Children’s art is the theme of the show on exhibit at the Blue Dolphin Gallery. The budding artists, who are age 14 and under, are members of the Brunswick County Home Educators Association and the Franklin Square Gallery children’s art class, both taught by M. E. West. In addition to the children’s artwork, their instructor will be exhibiting some of the porcelain dolls she designs. Gallery hours arc 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Non-perishable foods, like canned fruits, vegetables, rice and beans; fresh produce like potatoes, oranges and apples; cake mixes and dessert products; and monetary donations for the purchase of hams and turkeys are being accepted at the chamber office on Beach Road. Gift-wrapped presents for children are also needed. A list of suggested items as well as the children’s ages and gender is available from Ginny Byrd or Bill Collin, project coor dinators. Food, gifts and donations can be turned in at the chamber’s Trim-a Tree party scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, December 10. New Year’s party A New Year’s Eve party for young people will be held from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. December 31 at the Boiling Spring Lakes Volunteer Fire Department. Admission to the event, sponsored by the fire department, will be SI. Missing ingredient All those bakers out there who tried the grand prize-winning recipe in The State Port Pilot’s Christmas cookie contest found out that a major ingredient was missing. When she submitted her recipe, Judy Collins of Boiling Spring Lakes left out the sugar, although she mentioned it when she told how to prepare the recipe. The following is the complete and corrected recipe: MARY ANN’S HOLIDAY COOKIES 11/2 cups shortening 1 cup sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla 31/2 cups Hour 1 teaspoon baking powder 8 Hcrshcy bars Beat shortening 30 seconds, add sugar, beat until fluffy. Add egg and vanilla. Gradually add dry ingredients. Do not chill. Using line tip in cookie press, make long line on ungreased cookie sheet. Place squares of Hcrshcy bar on dough. Cover with another strip of dough. Bake 7 to 8 minutes at 400 degrees. Cut in squares. SENIOR ACTIVITIES Pottery shoppers’ destination A senior day trip to the Carolina Pottery at Smithfield is scheduled for Wednesday, December 9. The trip will include a day of shopping at Ihe pottery along with supper at Holt Lake Barbecue and Seafood. The cost is $7 a person and covers transportation. Spacer is limited. Reservations can be made by calling Kelly Fields at the Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department Program for adult scholars Applications are being accepted for the Adult Scholars Leadership Pro gram sponsored by the University of North Carolina at Wilmington Divi sion for Public Service and Extended Education. Limited to 35 participants, the program is designed to bring older adults together with community experts to learn more about issues, problems, creative possibilities and future plans of the region. Sessions will be held from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. February 4,11, 18 and 25, March 4, 11 and 18, and from 7 to 9 p.m. March 23. They will cover his tory and government, regional growth and development, health, the depart ment of aging, human relations, education, the arts, criminal justice and the media. The cost is $175 and includes a graduation reception, program and resource materials, speaker honoraria, continental breakfasts, refreshments and lunches. Exercise classes scheduled Exercise classes for seniors are sponsored by the Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department. Slow rhythmic exercise classes arc conducted at 10 a.m. on Mondays at the Town Creek Township District Park building. Exercises work on lim bering joints and toning muscles. Mature movement is offered at 9 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Long Beach Recreation Center and at the Lockwood Folly Township Dis trict Park community center. Classes are also held at 1 p.m. Thursdays at the Southport Community Building. January cruise to Bahamas A Disney/Bahamas cruise for seniors is being planned by the Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department The trip, scheduled for January 18-25, includes hotel accommodations, admission to the Walt Disney World Epcot Center, a cruise to Nassau and meals. The cost is $648 per person based on double occupancy. Checks can be made payable to Great American Vacations and mailed to the Brunswick County Parks and Recreation Department, P. O. Box 249, Bolivia, NC 28422. Day trip to state capital Senior day at the state capital is scheduled for Thursday, January 7. The Raleigh trip will include stops at the legislative building, the state capitol, the art museum and the arboretum. The $10 fee covers the cost of transportation. The only other cost will be for lunch at the legislative building cafeteria. Deadline for registration is Monday, December 21.
